In Zechariah 7:9-10, the Lord calls us to a life of justice, mercy, and compassion. These verses aren't just ancient words; they're a timeless guide for how we, believers in the body of Christ, should interact with each other and the world around us.

"This is what the Lord Almighty says: ‘Administer true justice; show mercy and compassion to one another. Do not oppress the widow or the fatherless, the foreigner or the poor. Do not plot evil against each other'." (Zechariah 7:9-10)

Administer True Justice

Justice isn't just about the courtroom; it's about ensuring fairness and equity in all our dealings. It's about standing up for what is right, even when it's difficult. As followers of Christ, we are called to:

  • Speak up for the voiceless: Be an advocate for those who are marginalized and oppressed.
  • Act with integrity: Let honesty and fairness guide your decisions in every situation.
  • Challenge injustice: Don't be afraid to confront systems and behaviors that perpetuate inequality.

Show Mercy and Compassion

Mercy and compassion are the hallmarks of a Christian life. They are about seeing the humanity in others, especially those who are suffering. We are called to:

  • Be empathetic: Put yourself in the shoes of others and try to understand their pain.
  • Offer practical help: Extend a helping hand to those in need, whether it's through financial assistance, emotional support, or practical service.
  • Forgive others: Let go of grudges and offer forgiveness, just as Christ forgave us.

Protect the Vulnerable

Zechariah specifically mentions widows, orphans, foreigners, and the poor. These are the groups that are most vulnerable to exploitation and oppression. We are called to:

  • Support widows and orphans: Offer practical assistance and emotional support to those who have lost loved ones.
  • Welcome the foreigner: Show hospitality and kindness to those who are new to our community.
  • Care for the poor: Meet the basic needs of those who are struggling financially.

Reject Evil Intentions

The final command in Zechariah 7:10 is not to plot evil against each other. This speaks to the importance of:

  • Honest Communication: Build relationships on truth, openness, and respect.
  • Conflict Resolution: Deal with disagreements in a godly manner, seeking reconciliation and understanding.
  • Unity in the Body of Christ: Foster an environment of love, support, and encouragement within the church.

A Call to Action

Let us, as believers in the body of Christ, commit to living out these principles in our daily lives. Let us be known as a community that administers true justice, shows mercy and compassion, protects the vulnerable, and rejects evil intentions. Let our actions reflect the love and grace of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Questions for church community to think about:

  • How can we better administer true justice in our community?
  • What are some practical ways we can show mercy and compassion to those in need?
  • How can we protect the vulnerable among us?
  • How can we ensure that we are not plotting evil against each other?
